Flat-pack bike helmet: wear at your own risk?

This project by design students Julien Bergignat and Patrice Mouille seems cool at first, but Fast Company’s Cliff Kuang points out some serious flaws:

[The Tatoo] neglects the way bike helmets actually work. It’s not simply that they’re padded–the padding inside a bike helmet is mostly for wearer comfort, rather than protection. Rather, helmets protect you because they’re monolithic and rigid–that allows the force of an impact to transmitted along their length, rather than directly into your head. They’re made of foam both to be lightweight and so that they can easily crack–just like a racecar, they’re meant to break-up upon impact, to further disperse kinetic energy. When wearing the Tatoo, you might feel the warm glow of future-forward design. You also won’t feel your legs, after you’re paralyzed.

At first blush he’s probably right. Is there any value in this project beyond serving as filling for a design student’s portfolio?

ThermaHelm Ice Pack Helmet

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

British designer Jullian Preston-Powers has designed an ingenious new helmet that could save the life’s of bikers and military personnel.

The ThermaHelm is constructed from carbon-fiber and has two lightweight chemical packs :o ne containing  water, the other containing ammonium nitrate. Which are built into the lining of the ThermaHelm. During a impact the two packs break and mix, creating a cooling reaction around the head.

The idea came to Julian during a basket ball game.

“I had smashed my elbow on (my friend’s) head,” he says. “Someone handed us both ice packs for our injuries, and it was so cold I couldn’t hold it for very long. So I placed it in my friend’s motorcycle helmet and he accidentally put it on while the pack was inside. He was surprised by how good it felt and that’s when I had that eureka moment.”

The ThermaHelm Ice Pack Helmet will be released in the UK during May for around $490. Development has already started on a new model which will include a video camera, GPS and Bluetooth for around $815.

If you need to store your bike helmet while out and about this fold flat Tatoo helmet will definitely allow you to save space. Deigned by Julien Bergignat the Tatoo design is influenced by thousands of years of animal evolution and the armadillos protective skin whih is made from plates rather than one solid shell.

Rapid assembly, low cost of production. The helmet stores flat for a fantastic improvement over the current standard for helmets, which are bigger than a head. Just unfold, clip each piece together, and slap it on the head! The entire helmet is made of polypropylene and can break down into entirely separate pieces for ease in recycling – or if you’re feeling really hipster that day, up-cycling.

Made from foam, paint, and a bike helmet. The idea was to make this look somewhat ‘cartoony’ …hence the misproportioned look. If this were to scale with the ‘real’ bumblebee. To make him 3.5′ tall, his head would have to be the size of a grapefruit.

Snowshorts are so obvious … and cool

SnowShorts put Rosebud on a kid's bum.

SnowShorts put Rosebud on a kid’s bum.

When something is designed that is so obvious, you have to wonder why it took so long for someone to come up with the idea. This is the case with SNOWSHORTS, which takes the idea of a cardboard box and marries it to skipants. HUH?

As a kid, we used to take cardboard and climb up to the top of a snow covered hill to barrel down it at breakneck speed. But with Orvis Pull SnowShorts, the designers have taken a hard plastic shell and attached it to the hind end of those ski pants, thereby marrying the toboggan to the tobaganner. Well, shorts anyway. Kids can pull the hard shell behind shorts over their cold weather clothes andhead off to fly down a snow covered hill. No need for cardboard, no crying “rosebud” at the end of your days. But a good bike helmet may be a good idea to avoid contact with a nearby tree.

Snow Shorts let kids fly down snow covered hills without the need for anything else but their butt.

Cost is about $35 at Amazon. Granted, it costs more than a cardboard box, but it’s a steal considering the cost of a tobaggan or a snow disc that kids will be using anyway.

And with Winter coming quickly and some cities already getting snow, isn’t this just a great idea?
