I’ve seen a number of different “desktop organizers” before, and most are just boring hunks of plastic or metal that don’t do much. Here’s one that still doesn’t do a ton, but at least adds a little style to your workspace, along with a few extra USB ports.

The Space Bar is essentially a tray under which your keyboard slides when it’s not in use. Its aluminum construction will definitely fit in with anyone owning a Mac, but should also look good with any setup. Three USB ports can be found on either side of the Space Bar, giving you easy access to a free port. Will this thing revolutionize your desk? Probably not; but the $42 price isn’t exactly terrible for what you get, provided you don’t have a keyboard tray built into your desk.

NerdCart: A Mobile Workstation and Media Center [Featured Workspace]

Today’s featured workspace is a mobile workspace and entertainment center made from a heavily-modified tool cart and includes everything from a keyboard tray with hidden storage to some excellent cable management.

Lifehacker reader RobotsOnCandy lives in a one-bedroom apartment with his wife—a wife none to fond of his rowdy late night gaming sessions. In order to keep his computer and gaming equipment organized and mobile enough to wheel to the best spot to keep down the noise, he modified a tool cart to serve as an awesome mobile computing and media center.

I came up with the idea for this project because I needed a fairly mobile station for my game consoles.

I have a weekly game night and my wife, understandably, doesn’t want to hear me playing fake war with my friends. We live in a one-bedroom apartment, so I need to be able to cart my hobby out of whichever room it isn’t welcome in at any given time.

I decided later that I would add the desk functionality to serve as a computer workstation.

The entire project was about $175, including the tool cart.

The attention to detail and organization on the cart is awesome. He drilled large holes in the cart to route the cables through and cleaned them up with rubber grommets, the power strip is mounted to a piece of plywood glued to the underside of one of the shelves and the tool drawer was converted into a keyboard tray with hidden storage underneath. Check out the photos below for a closer look and for detailed notes on what he used for each step check out his Flickr stream.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, throw the pictures on your Flickr account and add it to the Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Pool. Include some details about your setup and why it works for you, and you just might see it featured on the front page of Lifehacker.

$200 CPU Stand from Neiman Marcus is Basically a Decorated Wood Box

wood cpu stand
I would expect nothing less from notoriously overpriced retailer Neiman Marcus than a $200 wood box. “Camouflage your computer’s CPU with this decorative wooden stand with intricately carved medallion”. I guess it looks ok. But that little matching keyboard holder under the monitor with the pull-out keyboard tray? Yeah that will be an additional $200. Recession? What recession? So that will be $400 for boxes to hide your $350 PC. Sweet deal.

Oh and it’s “Not compatible with Macintosh computers.” Yep, this wooden box is not compatible with Macs. Why not just say “not compatible with computers that don’t fit in the $200 box”, because that’s about the logic level we’re working with here? And shipping and processing will run you $42 for the CPU stand and $31 for the keyboard holder. Add in tax and we’re over $500. I’m buying a set for everyone I know. {Cue Oprah Voice} You get a $500 computer stand, and you get a $500 computer stand, and you get a $500 computer stand. {end Oprah}
